Physical Education
Teacher:
Mr. Fred Grief
Students from kindergarten through eighth grade participate in physical education class twice a week. Students will engage in organized games, relay races, and cardiovascular fitness. Students will learn team work and good sportsmanship while enjoying these activities.
Grades 1-3:
For grades 1-3 each class begins with a certain amount of laps to get the children some cardiovascular exercise. Also, we will usually follow this up with some other exercises such as “jumping jacks”.
The goal for these grade levels is to keep the children active for the full 30 minutes of class. Thus, many games will involve constant running or hand-eye coordination building contests. This is important because as the children grow they will undoubtedly rely on these skills.
Also, the children will have certain classes designed specifically to discuss nutrition and a healthy diet. Even at an early age it is important to expose children to this information for future decisions.
Grades 4-8:
For grades 4-8, each class begins with about a ¼ mile run and then an extensive stretching routine. This is necessary to help prepare for the Presidential Physical Fitness testing, which is at the backbone of the curriculum for these grade levels. The Presidential Physical Fitness testing challenges the students in overall athletic ability in five different activities:
Curl-ups
Shuttle run
Mile run
Pull-ups
V-sit reach
The whole year is focused on assisting the students to complete these tasks to the best of their ability.
Also, at this grade level there will be several “classroom” discussions on nutrition and what goes into a balanced diet. At this age, children become more independent in their food choices and need to be aware of what they are putting into their bodies. They will be responsible for at least one “food journal”, which will document in detail their eating habits. We will then discuss and determine the best way for each child to consume a balanced diet.
Conclusion
The SCL Physical Education department is constantly adapting and changing to provide your children with the best knowledge to live a happy and healthy lifestyle. I look forward to continuing this standard of physical fitness excellence this school year.
Be Healthy,
Mr. G
